BYD has promoted Frank Thorpe to the new position of managing director, BYD UK. Thorpe joined BYD in August 2016 as the company’s first UK country manager. Since then he has led the company’s development as it has secured orders for more than 200 single- and double-deck buses in the British market, commissioned a combined HQ and electric bus centre at Iver, Buckinghamshire and put in place the foundations for further significant sales growth.
“In recognition of the excellent efforts and work Frank brought to the BYD UK organisation and the overall business success of his team, I am very pleased to be announcing this promotion,” says Isbrand Ho, managing director, BYD Europe.
Thorpe adds: “We have made considerable progress but the road ahead has plenty of challenges – not least from a host of new competitors and the difficulty of obtaining funding support from the relevant authorities. But we have considerable strengths to build on and are optimistic about the future”.
Thorpe joined BYD UK from GKN Hybrid Power (formerly Williams Hybrid Power) where for four years he was head of bus systems, having had earlier experience of bus and coach operations, when aged 20 he took over, with his brother Jim, as joint managing director of the family firm, FE Thorpe & Sons based in West London.
