Swift smartcard pilot for The Green Bus

Education transport specialist The Green Bus has introduced its own version of the  Swift smartcard for its services in the West Midlands.

Transport for West Midlands has supplied the company with 1,200 specially-branded smartcards for a pilot scheme that started this month. The Green Bus Swift card will include all the features of Swift but will only be accepted on its buses.

“We’re delighted to support The Green Bus in this innovative initiative,” says Richard Worrall, chair of the combined authority transport delivery committee. “Swift is already incredibly popular – with a Swift card used every two seconds in the West Midlands.

“Virtually all operators in the region accept Swift but this is a significant development, with an operator having their own branded Swift card just for their own bus service.”

The Green Bus operates principally in the morning and afternoon rush hour and managing director Ian Mack says: “We are delighted to convert to 100 per cent smartcard usage on our buses.

“Our occasional users were the first to use Swift pay-as-you-go and our new Swift season tickets mean that regular customers will be upgraded from low-tech and insecure flash passes.”
