FirstGroup places major order with ADL
The two-year agreement includes the option for a similar, follow-up order in 2009-2010, which would take the contract value to over £80 million.
Colin Robertson, chief executive of ADL, says: “We are delighted to be working on long-range projects such as this with FirstGroup. We have a shared vision, which is to provide drivers and passengers with world-class products that introduce the most advanced technology, raise the bar in terms of both comfort and vehicle performance, and meet environment and congestion challenges head-on.
“This two-year agreement, with the potential to extend it still further, gives both parties the opportunity to plan beyond the horizon and, simultaneously, to develop a working relationship that will be reflected in the shape and form of our future vehicles. As virtually all of the vehicles being programmed for FirstGroup are integrated buses, that is, incorporating our chassis and our bodywork, this must represent one of the most significant contract arrangements ever struck in the UK bus sector.”
In recent years the majority of First’s new buses have had Wrightbus bodies on Volvo chassis.
Nicola Shaw, managing director of First UK Bus, says: “We have worked with ADL and its predecessor companies for many years and I am delighted to see that partnership move to a new level. This is a landmark agreement, enabling both parties to plan ahead and to work together on the vehicles of the future.”
