Ironbridge 25 years of world status

Ironbridge 25 years of world status Ironbridge 25 years of world status
The seventh Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Festival will take place on Saturday 24 September, offering a host of family fun and stunning night-time illumination to this historic and scenic Shropshire location. This year’s festival is particularly significant since it will also celebrate the 25th anniversary since the World Heritage Site was designated in November 1986, one of the first in the United Kingdom, along with Stonehenge and the Giants Causeway.

Among the many attractions along the Wharfage at Ironbridge will be a variety of community and art activities plus refreshments and street entertainment. The Wharfage will be closed to traffic during the day to allow a giant street market to take place, while in the evening there will be a spectacular light show and firework display against the back drop of the Iron Bridge.

The festival has been designed to illustrate why the Ironbridge Gorge holds the special title of World Heritage Site and to highlight the steps being taken to protect it for the benefit of future generations.
