Reading orders 14 ethanol buses

READING Transport has placed the UK’s first fleet order for ethanol-fuelled buses. It is to receive 14 Scania OmniCity double-deckers which will have 270bhp DC9 E02 ethanol engines complying with Euro 5 and EEV emissions standards. They will be delivered in March.

"Through this order we are looking to significantly reduce our carbon footprint – and with supply becoming more and more plentiful, ethanol presents us with a viable fuel through which we can reduce our dependency on fossil fuels," says Sam Simpson, operations director for Reading Transport. "Moreover, when viewed against the rising price of diesel and the fact that oil will become an increasingly scarce resource, the use of ethanol is an attractive option today."

The Polish-built buses will have 76 leather seats, air-chilling systems, CCTV and coloured LED destination displays which mirror Reading Transport’s colour-coded routes.
