Swanage Railway gateway to Purbec
The stations at Norden, Corfe Castle, Harmons Cross, Herston and Swanage provide access to historic villages, country walks and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
Rebuilt from scratch, Swanage Railway is a standard gauge preserved steam railway offering one of the country's most intensively operated heritage steam and diesel timetable train service. Trains run daily from April to October as well as most weekends throughout the year. Steam and Diesel Galas, family fun events plus regular evening and lunchtime ‘Wessex Belle’ and ‘Dorsetman’ dining services and the popular Afternoon Dorset Cream teas complement themed events such as the popular Santa Special trains in the run up to Christmas.
Swanage Railway can be part of a day out in Purbeck. Visitors can travel to Swanage, with its blue flag beach, Victorian pier, shops and restaurants and appreciate the rich history of the area, abundant wildlife, fascinating geology and the influence the region had on authors such as Enid Blyton and Thomas Hardy.
Between trains or at the end of a journey, groups can discover part of Purbeck's hidden history by visiting the recently-opened Purbeck Mineral and Mining Museum next to Norden station which explains the clay mining history of the area.
Swanage Station has coach pick-up/drop-off points adjacent to the station as well as the purpose built park-and-ride facility and coach drop-off/pick-up point at Norden just north of Corfe Castle.
