Tower Transit buys Whippet

Tower Transit buys Whippet Whippet operates on the Cambridge busway.

Australian transport group Tower Transit has made its first UK move outside London with the purchase of Whippet Coaches of Swavesey, Cambridgeshire, from the Lee family for an undisclosed sum. The company, which was formed in 1919, runs around 50 vehicles and employs 100 people. It is one of the operators on the Cambridge busway, alongside Stagecoach, where it runs Volvo B7RLEs.

Tower Transit entered the British bus market last year when it purchased the London operations of First Bus. Last month it bought the London-based Impact Group which runs 130 vehicles from depots in Ealing and Croydon, mainly on local authority contracts.
