Securing onboard with Axis cameras
Focused only on professional IP cameras and encoders, and with more than 1,400 employees based in 42 countries, network video company Axis claims to have the world’s largest installed base of network cameras, with more than 30 per cent of the global market. The company says that today’s IP cameras deliver crystal clear surveillance video in real-time, HDTV quality.
It has more than 50,000 cameras installed in buses, trains, stations, airports and depots across the world, including SL Stockholm – 15,000 and EMT Madrid – 6,000 buses.
The higher resolution offered by IP cameras also offers the option of greatly reducing the number of cameras required to cover a particular scene. Together with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), which enables the power to the camera to be fed in the same cable as the video and data, this offers savings on installation and ongoing power supply costs.
The modern units also cope well in extreme lighting conditions, with Wide Dynamic Range – Dynamic Capture cameras enabling perfectly-exposed images in scenes with extreme contrast in light levels. Axis has also developed a new technology, Lightfinder, which enables the camera to give clear colour images in near complete darkness conditions without using any additional white or IR lighting, allowing effective security when the lights are switched off.
For complete darkness, thermal cameras can complement a network video system that needs to secure an area 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Axis says that using thermal imaging, a person can be detected up to 750m away.
Axis’ onboard product portfolio is developed to meet the tough demands from larger public transportation systems. The Axis M31-R network camera series is specially designed for mobile video surveillance in buses, trains, metros and emergency vehicles. Compact and discreet, the M31-R cameras have protection against dust and water, and can withstand vibrations, shocks, bumps and temperature fluctuations. In addition, the cameras’ active tampering alarm can detect tampering attempts such as blocking or spray-painting. The cameras are specially adapted to respond quickly to changes in light levels, ensuring that high image quality is maintained.
Designed for quick and reliable installation, mounting options allow the camera to be mounted on curved and flat surfaces. The desired field of view and a leveled image can be easily achieved by using the supplied lens tool to direct and rotate the ball that holds the lens and image sensor. The tool can also be used to exchange and focus the lens when a lens with a different angle of view is required. Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) support simplifies installation as only one cable is needed for carrying power and video.
